Why Grace and Peace?

Grace and peace is a greeting found in many New Testament letters and is full of meaning. It was, and remains in some places, common for Jews to greet one another with the Hebrew word “Shalom” which means “peace.” This carried over into the Greek language but for Christians a new word was added: grace. The word “grace” is also full of meaning but in this greeting it particularly speaks to the Gentiles. Grace meant that no longer was circumcision the law necessary for a right relationship with God. So the greeting “grace and peace” means that the good news of Jesus Christ is for Jew and Gentile. Good news indeed!
